In order to enroll in individual health insurance outside of open enrollment you must have a qualifying life event.
Some examples of qualifying life events include:
• Getting married
• Having, adopting, or placement of a child
• Permanently moving to a new area that offers different health plan options
• Losing other health coverage (for example due to a job loss, divorce, loss of eligibility for Medicaid or CHIP, expiration of COBRA coverage).
Note: Voluntarily quitting other health coverage or being terminated for not paying your premiums are not considered loss of coverage
If you leave your job, voluntarily or involuntarily, you will be offered the option to continue your group sponsored medical plan through COBRA.
Group medical benefits are priced as high as 40 % more than individual medical policies, and you can be charged up to 102% of your monthly premium.
